Embroidered patches use thread stitched into a backing. The surface is raised, which reads well on uniforms, bags, and hats when the design can be built from solid color areas.

Woven
Woven patches interlace finer yarns to reproduce thinner lines and smaller type than a typical embroidered stitch. The surface is flatter than embroidery.

PVC
PVC (rubber-style) patches are molded rather than stitched. They can carry raised shapes and are often chosen for gear that sees weather, abrasion, or frequent handling.

Printed / Sublimated
Printed or sublimated patches apply ink or dye to a fabric face. They are the usual choice when the artwork is photographic, heavily graded, or has more colors than thread or molded PVC can carry.

Leather
Leather patches are cut from leather or a leather-like material and finished with print, deboss, or similar branding. They read differently from thread or PVC and are often used on hats, jackets, and labels.
